This week we chill with Mike Gagos and Mike Upson, two of North County San Diego’s biggest Stone ( and craft beer in general ) fans.

Mike G. brings out a couple of special bottles from the cellar and we talk about cellaring beer, opening a beer with a lighter to preserve the cap, Pliny the Younger .. in a can? and geek out about the upcoming Stone Brewing 14th Anniversary Party coming in August.

First we start off with a side-by-side of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Ale (2002 & 2010). After the break, we crack open a 10th Anniversary Stone Brewing Co Double IPA.

This weeks Craft Beer Advocate gets a new intro and we get to hear Sean’s story about Craft beer.

New Brew Thursdays,

As I have written about over the past two years on my website www.mellodybrewing.com , I eat, drink, live and breath good beer.  I have been a homebrew for close to 10 years and in that time, have advocated (unknowingly to be honest for a while) the drinking of good beer, and the pairing with good food and good times.  It all started one random night when a friend of mine and I headed to the now famous Monk’s Cafe in Philadelphia, PA.  We went for mussels, we left full of Belgian beer.  I’ll never forget reading through the beer bible and the amazing tastes of my first LaTrappe Triple, and Westmalle Abbey Dubel.  In the beginning, after that first night, my mission was to drink every Trappist Ale available in the U.S. Luckily that could be done easily at Monk’s.  I then started homebrewing, and with that came the questions from family and friends asking, “if I brewed this in my bathtub?”  They really didn’t get it, or get good beer.   Over time I’ve not only drank the Trappists, I’ve sought out, traded for and drank the Top 10 Rated beers in the world, visited big and small breweries everywhere I travel and always bring beer to my favorate BYOB, instead of wine.

After years of brewing, challenging friends to drink good beers when out, exploring breweries with family and friends, and brewing my own beers for them to taste and enjoy: I’m proud to say I believe I have shifted how people look at beer – at least in the people around me.  I now get emails asking what they should drink, or what brewery to visit when out of town.  Some text me just a picture of what they are drinking, others have started to homebrew as well, under my tutorlige.  It’s been an amazing few years and I have had lots of great experiences and can thank craft beer for lots of them.

Now, like most crazy homebrewers, I’m exploring how to take my passion, my obsession and turn it into a career.  I’m writing about my ideas on my website, and in my beer discussions I talk about the experience of drinking beer, and how I pair beer with atmosphere and event – not only food.  I feel beers pair with music and conversation as well, just like a silky goat cheese, or farmhouse salad pairs with a Saison.

I’m proud to be a craft beer drinker, because for me beer pairs with experiences, and there’s nothing beer then good beer, good conversation and good friends.  That is what craft beer is to me.

Keep spreading the word of craft beer. If you guys are in town for Philly Beer Week in June, let me know – I’d love to share a pint or two with you.

Regards,
Sean Mellody

If you are in the SoCal beer scene, you have, at the very least, heard of Julian Shrago. He is one of the finest home brewers that we have had the pleasure to share beer with and will soon be heading up the Beachwood Brewing Co, with Gabe Gordon.

We get together with Julian in Dr. Bill’s backyard and drink some Saison and talk about the future of Julian’s brewing career, and why that will mean “WIN” for those of us who love Beachwood BBQ and love amazing Craft Beer.

Then Julian & Dr. Bill retire to the kitchen and do a delicious master pairings with German sausages and a fantastic Dunkel Weiss.

Our Master Pairings has a secret Barrel Aged Imperial Stout that gets paired with yummy biscotti from Yvonne.

This weeks Craft Beer Advocate is Darren from Virgin, who was introduced to craft beer by New Glarus.

Hey guys,

I’ll keep this short and sweet. Growing up in Wisconsin (formerly known as “miller lite country”), I was oblivious to the craft beer movement sweeping the country and even my home state. After graduating college and moving to Washington DC, I eventually learned the error of my ways after flying home for a relaxing family weekend. My mother-in-law had picked up a sampler of different New Glarus brews including Stone Soup, Crack’d Wheat, Uff-Da, Hop Hearty, Dancing Man, Black Wheat, and Wisconsin Belgian Red. I couldn’t believe I had been missing out for years on all of these amazing flavors. I didn’t waste any time. I toured the brewery just a few days later, breathing in the heavenly smells of yeast and sipping on a pint of Golden Ale…

Insert singing angels here, my eyes were finally open!  Craft. Beer. Epiphany.

The past year has been an incredible journey full of fantastic brews.  While still learning myself, I share your passion in advocating craft beer to others.  I’m happy to share my experience with you and hope others will continue to do the same.

Cheers!
Darren

We save dessert for an extra… and it was amazing. Aside from the L’Ete that Todd brought us, he also brought us down and amazing Apple Strudel Tripel that we enjoy with EPIC (yes, EPIC) cream cheese won-tons with chocolate and powdered sugar…

Apple Strudel Tripel, it’s the one adults want to drink.

We hope you enjoy as much as we did.

This week head brewer Todd Parker from Copper Canyon Brewing company comes out to join us in the studio, and we try his newest Saison called L’Ete. We spend most of the time looking up to Todd, both physically and metaphorically.

Producer Yvonne creates some amazing dishes to complement this spicy & floral saison, including a sweet & spicy chicken with peppers & onions. There are also some sweet treats on the table, but those are for later. ;)

This week we have our sexiest Master Pairings ever with special guest Laura ( @darthwife ). Dr. Bill brings a great pairing with Weihenstephaner Vitus, Weizenbock style beer from Brauerei Weihenstephan paired with a Spanish Manchego cheese and roasted pork with potatoes and sour kraut.

Our craft beer advocate comes from Steven in Virgina who throws “I don’t like beer” beer tasting parties! Cheers Steven!

Hey guys! Just found your show a few weeks ago, and really enjoying it.

I guess my craft beer advocate story actually started about 4 years ago when I had a Budweiser on my 21st birthday and absolutely HATED it!! I think it was probably about 2 years ago when I gave beer another shot. I had a Sam Adams Boston Lager and really enjoyed it and really became hooked on craft beer (I don’t know if people would still consider Sam Adams craft….but it’s more craft than Budweiser) Probably the only thing more enjoyable than drinking craft beer is introducing people to it. I have a lot of friends who have told me multiple times that they didn’t like beer…so I decided to host a “I don’t like beer beer tasting” party……and needless to say….everybody found at least one beer that they enjoyed drinking…and now they are avid craft beer drinkers. I also admire the passion that craft brewers put into their product. I know I’m not going to like everything I try, but that’s the great thing about craft beer drinkers, each one has his/her own personal taste, and I enjoy helping people figure out what their palate is.

Steven,
Fairfax VA

P.S. You can throw this in or not….but I’ve just launched my own beer media…..look me up on Facebook, Twitter, and Youtube (novabeerfly for all three) and I just launched my blog about a week and a half ago….it’s still a work in progress http://novabeerfly.wordpress.com

TO NBT!

I haven’t done anything major, but what i have started doing is when i see someone that is drinking a “crud” beer (aka main stream Bud/Coors/Miller or possibly run of the mills stuff in the inbev family) i send them over a real good beer! Possibly stone, Dog Fish Head, sometimes i send some belgian beers over like an entry level Chimay, or even send them flavored beers like 21st amendments Hell or High Watermelon… it has proven to be a smidgen costly at times, but i feel that it is a small price to pay to get people to open their eyes about what is out there. And the more people out there drinking these beers the more likely that they will stay in business, and the more likely that more craft beer will pop up… the more the merrier!

Hey guys! I really enjoy the show! I hope to start my own soon. My advocacy story starts in Japan. After a long time drinking Suntory, Asahi, Sapporo and, Kirin, I was hoping more was out there in terms of flavor and community. I googled bars in Japan and found a link on ratebeer to a bar called “doll dress” in Osaka Japan. Doll dress is a belgian bar/S&M clothing store. Why? I have no idea but I quickly became aquainted with the local and famous beers of belgium. The bar owners introduced me to a vast and growing community of craft beers (called “gee beer”) in Japan that are absurdly niche yet amazing right now. Before I left Japan, I stopped at a bar in Tokyo called “Dry Dock” that actually imported Stone beers. Having never had or heard of Stone, I asked the bartender which was his favorite. He gave me the Ruination IPA. I’ve never been the same. I advocate craft beer every day now. Craft Beer is about to explode everywhere, not just the USA!

May 27 : A Trip to the Cellar from New Brew Thursday on Vimeo.

Want to watch this on your Mobile Device ? Mobile version

This week we join Dr. Bill is his “Cellar of Amazingness”, which has become it’s formal name, and we try two very tasty brews.

The first, in honor of The Bruery’s second anniversary, is a the Rye Papier, one of the four versions put out as a celebration of the first year, signified by a silver wax color. The third anniversary year beer is leather … which doesn’t seem appetizing, but we know Patrick will create something magical yet again, and will likely name it “Cuir”, which sounds better then leather. ;)

We also want to say congratulations to The Bruery for 2 EPIC years, and a huge thanks for making awesome beer, and throwing an awesome 2nd anniversary party!

Dr. Bill pairs this with a Tiramisu, and a Blue Stilton cheese.

After that, we unleash the Dark Lord. However, since this is Dr. Bill’s cellar we don’t open a 2010 Dark Lord. The guys at 3 Floyds have traditionally chosen a different color wax for each year of Dark Lord. The Orange wax tells the drinker that they are about to travel back to the year 2005… which is where we land and enjoy this tasty beverage.

Thanks to DR000 for this great shot of various year Dark Lord and Behemoth bottles.

Dr. Bill pairs this with what’s left of the Tiramisu, and a Rochefort cheese.

It was an evening of decadence.

We weren’t able to include a Craft Beer Advocate this week due to time constraints, but we have a growing collection of amazing stories to share, and still want you to go and check out the Beer Wars movie. This amazing documentary will help you understand the struggle that craft beer brewers go through, and help you understand why now is the time to join the revolution!

Want to watch on your mobile device? Mobile Version Here.

This week we are in Fredrick Maryland, hanging with Matt Brophy, the VP of brewing operations of Flying Dog, and overall awesome dude! We drink Raging Bitch, a Belgian Style IPA, which is amazing, and talk about Hunter S. Thompson & Ralph Steadman and their connection to Flying Dog.

Flying Dog was our first stop on the East Coast road trip we took back in March. We were a little tired when we got there, but as soon as we saw how awesome the brewery was and how cool all the people were there, we perked right up, and got down to doing what we do best.. drinking beer. Raging Bitch has quickly become a favorite for all three of us, and we are grateful for the amazing way that Flying Dog received us and took care of us. Thanks guys!

Hey guys,

Well this is erick or otherwise known as thor13 on the twitter. I will
try to make story short just like me. I recently began drinking craft
beer because, I really did not want to give to much money to the big
three beer makers in America. After having tried some the bigger
market beers like Guinness and Heineken. I thought maybe beer isn’t
for me. I then stumbled upon your podcast through Aric or best known
as phatemokid and began watching the show. At first it I was lost of
what you guys were talking about but, I had the same reaction when I
was watching Gary Vaynerchuk on his show, but you guys were just as
passionate about beer as Gary was about wine. I kept watching and you
guys have made try a few new craft beers when other wise I would have
never even thought about getting one. Thankfully I can say I have
never had a bud light or coors light. I could have honestly given you
how many beers, I have tried on one hand before meeting you guys. Now
I try to promote you guys where ever I go even though I still get lost
when I walk into a place like Bevmo.

Thanks for all that you guy are doing,
Stephen, John, and Brad.
